I think there is scope to read Heathcliff as a force of nature/a storm/ a hurricane or wild animal - amoral to a degree that is not human. One of the points raised at the event was the 'abuse' that he suffered but considering the historical setting that WH actually has, the treatement of servants/possibly a slave in the book is not totally exceptional. He was rescued and brought to the farm - but was Mr Earnshaw being charitable, did he spot a potential free farm hand - or did he, as some people believe discover an illegitimate child he had fathered on a now dead mother?
One thing is that in order to make him a hero who could fall in love, I needed to make sure that his need for revenge was only directed at those who deserve it. In the original, for example, Catherine Linton has done nothing to Heathcliff.Kate Walkerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17277223651288830541noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30203557.post-37910405189209863802011-09-19T17:11:09.138+01:002011-09-19T17:11:09.138+01:00I'm really glad it went well, Kate.I'm really glad it went well, Kate.Laura Vivancohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00906661869372622821noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30203557.post-62443750658377963112011-09-19T16:58:27.598+01:002011-09-19T16:58:27.598+01:00Thank you Nas - I'm glad you enjoyed the discu...Thank you Nas - I'm glad you enjoyed the discussion bout WH and Return of the StrangerKate Walkerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17277223651288830541noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30203557.post-33840165544327975722011-09-19T16:57:40.667+01:002011-09-19T16:57:40.667+01:00Thank you for the great interview, Laura - you hel...Thank you for the great interview, Laura - you helped me clarify my thoughts and collect up my ideas ready for the Bronte Festival o Women's Writing event. FWIW, I watched a sales reel of Andrea Arnold's film Wuthering Heights a few weeks ago.

While it has its flaws, it was surprisingly good. Quite intense, raw and *a-hem* easy on the eye. Almost quite European too, as it has a fly-on-the-wall documentary feel to it, with a touch of films like Days of Heaven (directed by Terrence Malick, starring Richard Gere and Brooke Adams), The Duellists (directed by Ridley Scott, with Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel) and William Nicholson's Victorian-era romantic film, Firelight. Not so luxurious as these, but the scope is there.

I felt Arnold's casting of both actors had helped me to make sense of their actions, which previous adaptations had never managed to achieve for me. Likewise with Cathy, it was easier to make sense of her as well. I liked and sympathised with the young Heathcliff (impressive debut - I don't remember the actor's name, sorry) and Cathy more than their older counterparts, but they all did a decent job, I felt. While dialogue was sparse, accents were quite thick but not so bad that subtitles would be needed. :D

If there's anything I didn't like about the film, it's the swearing. I didn't think it was necessary to have that to enforce the rawness and intensity, because the British Sunday-like Yorkshire landscape and the characters already have offered that. But alas. The film was also a little too long and some actors in secondary roles were a little too stiff for my taste.

As a whole, I felt Arnold has captured the essence of Wuthering Heights (as well as Yorkshire itself) - she's managed to convey a sense of obsession and its debilitation so well, which was quite awesome.

While some fans of previous films (and never read the book) may rebel against this adaptation (rather, the casting of Heathcliff) and Arnold's bare-bones approach, I suspect it'll win a small army of fans who relish in solitude, silence and pain. I think, of all adaptations I saw so far, I like this one best.
It has *style*. And, excuse me for being dramatic, soul. In a way, it's more elegant than previous adaptations including that horrid Ralph Fiennes version (I watch it whenever I need a good belly laugh).

Oops. I didn't mean to write a quick review. I'm still thinking about that film - especially the first half with younger Heathcliff and Cathy - and I'd love to watch it again, which I think is a compliment. Well, since I wrote this as a review, here's my grade for the film: 4 out of 5. :DAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30203557.post-33901819195665296512011-09-18T22:44:52.026+01:002011-09-18T22:44:52.026+01:00Oh Wow!
